December: Seasons Greetings

I love Christmas weddings – there’s just something about the festive season that adds a special touch of sparkle and magic to the celebration. For this design I wanted to use an alternative colour palette to the traditional red and green that’s so popular at this time of year, and have instead used shades of silver and gold, punctuated by accents of eucalyptus and fir green for an elegant, Christmassy feel.

The Design

For this board I wanted to create a Christmassy atmosphere without using the traditional red and green colour scheme. Don’t get me wrong, I think the combination of red and green is lovely, but lots of brides want something more original for their seasonal wedding, or don’t want to use such heavy colours. So instead I’ve chosen a palette of silver and gold for warmth and sparkle, and added very subtle touches of soft green to avoid the design feeling too pale or monotonous.

I imagine this wedding to be a beautiful, elegant affair in a grand country house, with large open fires and a huge sweeping staircase adorned with fir garlands. Of course, no Christmas wedding would be complete without a Christmas tree, which would be heaving beneath hundreds of twinkling white fairy lights and large silver and gold baubles.

For additional decoration I’d use wintry foliage, like eucalyptus, interspersed with the white berries of mistletoe to cover mantelpieces and window sills, with large church candles adding a feeling of romance and warmth. I’d keep floral arrangements predominantly white for a wintry feel, and would use white fairy lights to add sparkle and glamour to the reception space.

In keeping with the Christmas theme I’d serve hot toddies of mulled wine and cider for reception drinks; I love the idea of a seasonal menu, but perhaps opting for goose or partridge as a change from the usual turkey. I’d leave crackers at each place setting, along with small boxes of chocolates or sweets wrapped in silver and gold gift-wrap to double as both place cards and favours.

As Christmas is a time of indulgence, I’d also create a dessert station filled with festive treats like mince pies, stollen, marzipan fruits, miniature Christmas cakes, candy canes and chocolate novelties. I imagine guests relaxing to a background of instrumental Christmas tunes and carols during the wedding breakfast, and partying the night away to a playlist of classic ‘office party’ hits. Now doesn’t that make you feel just a teeny bit festive?!
