September: Autumn Harvest

September sees the return of shorter days and chillier mornings, and is a time when we reluctantly bid farewell to the summer for another year. But rather than feeling gloomy about the prospect of winter approaching, this board celebrates the transition from summer to autumn with a warm colour palette and ‘harvest festival’ theme.

The Design

As September sees farmers and gardeners gathering in their crops, all I could think about when designing this month’s board was food! I just adore the idea of incorporating a ‘harvest’ theme into a wedding design.

This wedding has a very rustic feel to it, and I envisage an old barn with exposed wooden beams and scattered hay bales to be the perfect setting. The colour palette has been chosen to reflect the change in the seasons – burnt oranges and yellows reflect the changing of the leaves to warm autumn colours, whilst soft shades of green provide a lingering hint of summer. I really like the idea of the bride wearing a coloured gown to complement this earthy colour palette.

To reflect the harvest theme I’d use apples and pears as name card holders, and I particularly love the idea of having guests ‘pick their own’ escort cards (as shown here on Once Wed ), with name sticks pulled out of soil/moss to reveal a vegetable with their table number. For decoration I would incorporate seasonal fruits and vegetables where possible, and for favours I’d give small, hand-tied paper bags of seeds or spring bulbs.

Now who says it’s a shame that the summer’s over?!
