Up until the last 10-15 years white lace was a main form of decoration for the wedding dress and veil, and was a significant part of the wedding design. However, tulle and chiffon ruffles, soft silk flowers, diamante crystals and satin bows have led many brides to avoid this beautiful material for fear of their wedding looking old-fashioned, fussy or dated. So this week I’ve created a design board that celebrates the delicate elegance of white wedding lace, but retains a chic and contemporary style.

The main focus for this concept is the white lace, and I would make this a predominant feature for the bridal gown and accessories. I would, however, avoid using lace as part of the venue decor, as this could easily result in the wedding having a more traditional or vintage feel. Instead, I’d use flowers with delicate petals and a ‘ruffly’ feel to emulate the lace detailing, and use lots of soft candlelight to create a romantic atmosphere. I’d keep the main colour palette white, but would add in very subtle accents of powder blue throughout the design for that added touch of elegance.

For the venue I’m thinking along the lines of a white urban space, with lots of natural daylight and simple crystal chandeliers. I think a classic champagne and canapé reception would be the perfect start to the celebration, with background music provided by a harp or string quartet. However, I love the idea of incorporating more ‘modern’ ideas, such as a sweet station, photo booth or juke box, throughout the day and into the evening.

I have to admit to finding the design of this board more challenging than other concepts, mainly in achieving the right balance between the traditional lacework and contemporary styling. However, I’m quite pleased with the final result, so I hope you like it too!
