Wedding Planner Q&A – Inviting Work Colleagues

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Posted in Planning Advice , Wedding Planner Q&A

In our weekly Wedding Planner Q&A we look at how to deal with common anxieties, questions and problems that often crop up when you’re planning a wedding, and today I’m offering advice on how to invite work colleagues without their partners.

We really want to invite our work colleagues to our evening reception, but we can’t afford for their partners to attend as well. We don’t really socialise with the partners outside of work, so we don’t really know them that well. Is it rude to only invite our colleagues and not their other halves?

This is a common dilemma that’s faced by lots of couples. After sending your invitations explain to them why you haven’t invited their partners – for example, tell them that your venue has limited numbers or that whilst you would love for them both to attend you’re on a tight budget. Most people will understand and won’t take offence.

Keep in mind that you might be able to invite their partners at a later date if other guests are unable to attend and you find you have more space available. Don’t be upset, though, if they choose not to come. Depending on the relationships at work they may not know many other people and could feel uncomfortable attending on their own. Make sure you apply the same rule to everyone – you’ll create plenty of friction if the boss turns up with his wife and everyone else is on their own!
