Your wedding photographer is responsible for capturing all the memories and emotion of your wedding day, and as such has an incredibly important role to play. Today I’m delighted to introduce professional photographer Samantha Jones , who shares her thoughts on choosing your wedding photographer and dealing with those ‘in front of camera’ nerves.

1. How would you describe your photography?

Informal, fun and fresh – with a feminine twist!

2. What do you love most about being a wedding photographer?

I love sharing people’s joy and being creative whilst I capture all the details of their celebrations. The fact that I have been asked to share such a special time gives me great pleasure. I do also very much enjoy the freedom and flexibility of working for myself.

3. What are the most important things a couple should look for when choosing their wedding photographer?

You should certainly feel comfortable with your photographer. After all, if you ask them to photograph from bridal preparations onwards, the photographer is going to be with you for eight hours or more! Do ask to see examples of an album showing an entire wedding, rather than just a selection of “the best of …” Most of all I would recommend spending some time with your photographer to make sure you feel relaxed with them – visit the venue together or even just have a cup of coffee with them…

4. Lots of brides and grooms say that they hate having their photograph taken. What would be your advice to couples who are worried about looking awkward or unnatural in their wedding photos?

I try to schedule a pre-wedding shoot with my couples, sometimes during our first consultation or later on, preferably at the venue. Rather than being self-conscious on your wedding day, pre-meets create a feeling of trust (and enjoyment) and I know that when I come to photographing the actual day things will be more relaxed and natural, rather than stiff and formal. Some recent comments have proved that this seems to work for many couples: “We had a wonderful day yesterday – you made us feel relaxed and totally at ease. Pete has got really excited about the wedding now, which is unusual for him!!! We know that on the day you will be professional and friendly and make our special day stress-free and enjoyable.”

5. You’ve worked at lots of different weddings. What has been your favourite, and what would you say makes a great wedding?

I’ve enjoyed all of them! I think my favourite weddings are where the couple haven’t lost sight of the fact that they are celebrating their love – not just holding a big party for everyone. Sometimes it seems that the couple get so caught up in the planning that they almost forget to enjoy the day. But when the bride steps up alongside the groom and you see him look down at her … it’s just magical!
