Before becoming a wedding planner I used to be a research scientist, and even though I no longer work in this field I do still have a love of science. As a planner I’m always looking for ways to weave the personalities and tastes of my clients into their wedding, and when I spotted this beautiful celebration over on Style Me Pretty that was designed to reflect the couples’ scientific backgrounds, I just couldn’t resist creating my own science-themed design board.

Let's Experiment design board

For this board I wanted to create an original design, but one that was still stylish and appropriate for a wedding celebration. I’ve opted for a funky colour scheme of blue, green and pink with occasional hints of yellow, both for a funky, light-hearted look and to reflect our perception of experimental concoctions and potions!

For decoration I’d use different shapes and sizes of scientific glassware, to add both texture and originality to the design. For example, I’d use conical and volumetric flasks as centrepieces, fill large apothecary jars with sweets and use small beakers as candle holders. I also like the idea of hanging test tubes in surrounding trees and bushes, perhaps decorating with a single flower or filling them with coloured crystals.

To continue the science theme, I’d position small chalkboards around the reception space with famous equations or quotations, and would name guest tables after elements in the periodic table. I’d also scatter framed photographs of legendary scientists, such as Einstein, Darwin and Newton, around the reception space, and in the evening hang small, coloured paper lanterns in clusters to look like giant molecules. No scientific experiment would be complete without the customary explosions and smoke, so a firework display would be the ideal end to the evening, with guests creating a sparkler-lit walkway for the bride and groom to leave for their honeymoon.
